New Clinician Scientist Program

New paths for clinical research in the field of Cognitive Science

The Max Planck School of Cognition's novel Clinician Scientist Program will start in fall 2022 and invites ambitious young scientists to combine clinical specialization with scientific training and study in the context of a unique network of outstanding scientists.

The Max Planck Schools - Drivers of innovation

The idea of the Max Planck Schools is to pool the scientific excellence at German universities and non-university research organizations for qualifying outstanding international PhD candidates. Since 2018, the Max Planck Schools have developed interdisciplinary doctoral programs to recruit highly qualified young researchers to Germany or to keep them here. The Max Planck School of Cognition is expanding its interdisciplinary approach to the medical world with the newly established Clinician Scientist Program (CSP).

A new initiative of the Max Planck School of Cognition

This pioneering initiative is primarily aimed at applicants with a background in Clinical Medicine who are interested in pursuing a scientific career in the fields of Psychiatry and Neurology. The goal of the CSP is to bridge the gap between medical training and clinical research in the field of Cognition, and to recruit promising medical doctors with a strong interest in research. A specially developed mentoring program with outstanding Fellows with a medical background not only gives chosen candidates access to excellent infrastructure and innovative teaching methods, but also offers close supervision by leading scientists in their respective fields. “The Clinician Scientist Program at the MPS Cognition will push the boundaries of clinical and research training in the fields of Psychiatry and Cognitive Neurology”, says Arno Villringer, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences and Speaker of the MPS Cognition.

By establishing the CSP, the Max Planck School of Cognition also realizes one of the recommendations of the interim evaluation which took place in 2021. In view of the evaluators, such a medical pathway will expand MPS Cognition’s interdisciplinary approach to the medical world, allow young physicians to mature into well-trained clinician scientists, and foster overall integration of medical and neuroscientific aspects that will ultimately benefit the German science and medical systems.

From the clinic into research

The newly formed program offers ambitious candidates the opportunity to study in the context of a unique network by combining cutting-edge research in the field of cognitive neuroscience with clinical work in associated university hospitals. PhD candidates will receive the corresponding degree depending on the academic affiliation of the respective Fellow (e.g., MD/PhD) and clinical institution. The CSP will start on September 1, 2022. All positions are fully funded. Further information on the program content and application requirements for the CSP can be found here.

The application deadline is March 31, 2022.
